Pharmacy technicians are responsible for dispensing prescriptions, managing pharmaceutical inventory, processing insurance claims, prepping certain types of medication and completing administrative work. You must be registered with the New York State Education Department – Office of the Professions to work as a registered pharmacy technician and continue to hold a license from New York State.

Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in New York
The following is a list of the basic requirements you must meet to be a certified pharmacy tech in New York:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or a GED
- Must be of good moral character
- Certification from a nationally accredited pharmacy technician program

Licensure renewal is required every three years to continue working as a registered pharmacy technician.
Training Requirements
As New York does not does not require a formal education to work as a pharmacy technician. However upon initial registration you are required to have obtained certification from a nationally accredited pharmacy tech program.
To successfully pass one of the national certification exams, either the PTCB exam or ExCPT exam, your best bet is to attend a pharmacy tech program that is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
Training programs that are accredited by the ASHP have shown that they meet the recommended requirements as deemed by the national certification programs from both the PTCB and the ExCPT examinations.
Certification Requirements
National certification is required in New York. You may be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) by taking and passing an exam.
