Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Massachusetts
Registration in the state of Massachusetts is required with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy to work as a pharmacy technician.
The state of Massachusetts contracts with an outside entity to process pharmacy technician applications for registration. To register with the state, fully complete and submit the Pharmacy Technician Registration Application, notarized by a notary public, along with the required application fee of $150. The application must also include a 2” x 2” photo.
Renewals for registration are due on a biennial basis on your birthday. The renewal fee is $60.
Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Massachusetts
The following are the minimum requirements for registering if you are nationally certified by ExCPT or PTCB:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be of good moral character
- Must not have ever been convicted of a drug-related crime
- Have a high school diploma or possess a GED
- Are currently certified by the ExCPT or the PTCB
The following are the minimum requirements for registering if you are not nationally certified by ExCPT or PTCB:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be of good moral character
- Must not have ever been convicted of a drug-related crime
- Have a high school diploma or possess a GED
- Completed a pharmacy technician training program approved by the Board OR has at least 500 hours of employment as a pharmacy technician trainee
- Have passed a pharmacy tech assessment exam that is approved by the Board and administered by the employer or agency of the employer

Certification Requirements
National certification is not required in Massachusetts. However the state recognizes national certifications from both the PTCB and the ExCPT.

Lincoln Technical Institute, with locations in Somerville, Brockton and Lowell, offers pharmacy technician training that you can take in during the day, afternoon or evenings. The program requires completion of a clinical externship where you receive at least 180 hours of hands-on experience. This program is approved by the state Board.
