Pharmacy Technician Requirements in West Virginia
To work as a pharmacy technician in West Virginia, you must register with the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy. To register with the state, fully complete and submit the Application for Registration as a Pharmacy Technician together with the registration fee of $25.
Registrations must be renewed annually by July 1st. Renew your registration by completing the Application for License Renewal as a Registered Pharmacy Technician and together with the renewal fee of $30.
If you have not yet earned a national certification from the PTCB or NHA, you may apply as a trainee. To register as a training, have the pharmacist-in-charge complete and submit the Pharmacy Technician Trainee Notification application. You can work as a trainee for up to two years and 2,080 hours in a pharmacy. After completing the training, it is required for you to take and pass the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy Technician Examination to become registered.
Basic Pharmacy Technician Requirements in West Virginia
The following are the minimum requirements to register as a Pharmacy Technician:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have a high school diploma or a GED
- Must have successfully completed a Board-approved education and training program from either a formal training program or one provided by a pharmacy
- Beginning 6/30/2014 must be nationally certified by the PTCB or NHA
- Must not be an abuser of alcohol or drugs – per Board discretion if you are in an active recovery program
- Must not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor in relation to pharmacy practice
- Must complete a minimum of 20 hours training with the pharmacist-in-charge and provide proof of training
The following are the minimum requirements to register as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee:
- May be younger than 18 years old
- Must have successfully completed a Board-approved education and training program from either a formal training program or one provided by a pharmacy
Training Requirements
The state of West Virginia requires successful completion from a Board-approved formal pharmacy technician training program or a program administered by a pharmacy.
If you choose to attend a formal training program, check that it is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Programs that are accredited by the ASHP have shown that they meet the recommended requirements to help enable you to pass one of the national exams.

Carver Career & Technical Center offers a Pharmacy Technician Program that is designed to be completed in six months. The school offers the only program that is accredited by the ASHP. Classes begin in January and July each year.

I have completed the trainee 2 years now where do I take the WV state board of pharmacy tech exam?
According to the WV Board of Pharmacy website, after you have completed 960 hours of on-the-job training and graduated from an approved pharm tech program, you must also have obtained a pharmacy tech national certification either thru the PTCB or EXCPT.
